Who am I and Why am I Running?
I am Lynn Moen and I would like to be your PC Candidate for Calgary Mountain View in the next provincial election. I have lived in this riding for over 25 years and have a passion for the community and the issues facing it.
Because of the recent challenges in the Alberta economy, I believe that the PC party needs good candidates that have a solid financial and tax background to balance the needs of Albertans with the resources in our province.
I am a Chartered Professional Accountant and have worked in public practice and industry in Calgary since 1988, after graduating from the University of Calgary. I have a strong financial background in the oil and gas industry as well as the real estate investment and development industry, specializing in the area of tax.
I have decided to put myself forward as a nominee as I feel there is a real need for people with my skill set in our government. This is especially the case now so that we can ensure Alberta maintains its competitive advantage in Canada and globally for decades to come.
What is my Professional Experience?
I worked as a consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers for 11 years where I articled and received my CA designation (now CPA) and in the private sector in Calgary for over 14 years. Some of the positions I have held in the private sector are as follows:
- Canadian Pacific (6 years) - Manager of Tax;
- ConocoPhillips Canada (5 years) - Director of Tax, responsible for all tax issues and compliance in Canada; was a member of the Finance Leadership Team and met regularly with senior management to discuss business issues;
- Walton Global Investments (4 years) - Senior Vice-President of Tax, working with all business groups in this land management and development company to ensure client issues are resolved and tax issues in the company are addressed.
As a result of my experience in the above companies in Calgary, I have built an excellent understanding of the business issues in some of the most important industries in Alberta, including the financing, budgeting and decision-making processes in these industries. I believe I have some very necessary skills that are required to run an efficient and productive government. These skills are required to ensure that Alberta continues to be a destination for responsible business investment while maintaining its world-class education system and addressing health care needs of all Albertans, especially our seniors.
Community and Advocacy Work
I have been a volunteer in many capacities over the years. Starting with student union and yearbook editor in high school, and continuing with student club executive involvement in university, other positions I have held include the following:
- Treasurer and board member for Maenad Theatre Company;
- Board member for Habitat for Humanity, Kitchener;
- Head of the United Way campaign for Canadian Pacific Limited;
- Vice-Chair of the Tax Executives Institute Canadian Income Tax Committee, an advocacy group that meets with the Canada Revenue Agency and the Department of Finance to discuss tax policy concerns;
- Incoming Regional Vice-President for the Tax Executives Institute, representing the Canadian chapter at the international level;
- Council member of the International Fiscal Association in Canada, which provides a forum for the discussion of international fiscal questions.
